WILD At Alaska’s Sunshine Point, expect to see no other anglers —
other than Alaska brown bears — during a week’s stay. The original cabin
is nearly 100 years old with a separate dining room and two guest cabins.
Your guide also serves as the cook and bear-spotter for you and up to four
anglers per week.
Fishing is by walking or jet-powered skiff, and anglers can easily see
huge concentrations of salmon in the clear water. September is the best
season for catching silver salmon that range from 12 to 20 pounds. A
six-night stay costs $3,350 per person and includes 15-minute float-plane
transportation to and from Cordova, Alaska; all meals, lodging and guide
MILD Noyes Island is a 31-square-mile remote island wilderness where
the only inhabitants are deer, bears and the staff and guests of Steamboat
Bay Fishing Club. Decadent luxury is everywhere, from the hand-carved
furnishings to meals that source produce from the lodge’s garden or seafood often caught within sight of the lodge.
The coastal ecosystem here offers spectacular saltwater fishing from
modern fishing boats. The daily catch of halibut, rockfish, lingcod, coho
and king salmon is custom filleted and packed in insulated containers
ready for airline shipment. Nearby sister lodge, Waterfall Resort, offers
additional fishing options and pricing. Both lodges are accessible by float-plane from Ketchikan, Alaska. A four-night, all-inclusive stay at Steamboat
is $7,695 per person. www.steamboatbay.com — Christopher Batin
